Narrative Tools for Breastfeeding Support Professionals

Using narrative medicine to support mothers through breastfeeding, weaning, and care transitions

Breastfeeding support is never only technical. Mothers often carry powerful stories about care, sacrifice, attachment, guilt, failure, and what it means to be a “good mother.” This 90-minute training uses a Narrative Medicine lens to help professionals recognise the hidden scripts mothers bring into breastfeeding and weaning conversations and support them in creating more compassionate, realistic, and culturally aware narratives of care.

This training covers:

  • How mothers build personal stories around breastfeeding, weaning, and care.
  • Why guilt, pressure, and fear often intensify during feeding transitions.
  • How professional language can either relieve pressure or deepen self-blame.
  • How to recognise common maternal scripts, such as “I am failing,” “I am abandoning my child,” or “a good mother should continue.”
  • How to use reflective questions, storytelling, and narrative reframing in supportive conversations.
  • How to help mothers move toward a more compassionate and realistic story of care.
  • Where narrative support ends, and when referral or additional professional care is needed.

Note: Narrative support is not therapy. This training does not qualify participants to provide psychotherapy, clinical lactation care, or mental health treatment.
